There are lovely walks from the door. Bird watching. Dove Dale and The Peak District National Park are just over the Weaver Hills, the Staffordshire Moorlands and Manifold Valley are to the North. Children just love the stepping stones over the River Dove!
Try cycling on the nearby Tissington and High Peak Trails ( cycle hire centres locally or bring your own ! - storage available ).
Alton Towers one of Europe’s most exiting theme parks is only 10 minutes drive away. The American Adventure, Water World or Gulliver’s Kingdom ( for the tiny tots ) are all within easy reach.
Visit the many wonderful Stately Homes , National Trust properties and their gardens: Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall’s Museum of Childhood, Calke Abbey, Hardwick Hall, Little Morton Hall, Shugborough Hall to name but a few.
There are other gardens such as Biddulph Grange,Dorothy Clive’s Quarry Garden and more !
Tutbury Castle is well worth a visit - you might even be lucky enough to have an audience with Mary Queen of Scots or Queen Elizabeth 1 !
There is wonderful antique hunting in Leek and Ashbourne (even‘ Shabby Chic ‘ painted French imports! ) Try No. 64 St. Edward St. for lunch or bring something back with you from their deli.
Find bargains - at the many factory outlets , farmer’s markets and garden centres.
Ashbourne (6 miles) a picturesque market town “ The Gateway to Dove Dale ” where cobbled squares are lined with shops, fashion boutiques, galleries, inns and restaurants.
Go to Bakewell market ( Mondays) and try the famous pudding !
Visit a local Well Dressing - The tradition may date back to the Celts or even earlier, it is only found in or near Derbyshire.
Visit ‘ The Potteries ‘ for a China Experience.
Treak Cliff Cavern ( Home of Blue John Stone ) or Poole’s Cavern will interest most people.
There is fishing, clay-pigeon shooting, golf, horse riding, water sports at Carsington Water and even adventure sports nearby - paragliding, caving, rock climbing (advance booking required).
If you enjoy Horse Racing - Uttoxeter is 8 miles away.
Have ‘ An Out Of This World Experience ‘ at the Jodrell Bank Science Centre.
Or relax and play boules in the the enclosed ,lawned garden and enjoy the beautiful views !
